FAQs
What is a Market Order?
A Market Order is an order to buy or sell a stock at the market price. You do not need to set a limit price and your order will be executed at best available market price at time of execution.
Can I place a Market Order when the market is closed?
Hong Kong Market: Market Order will only be accepted during Hong Kong Stock Exchange's Continuous Trading Session (09:30 am - 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm HKT).
US Market: Market Order will only be accepted during normal trading hours (9:30 am - 4:00 pm US Eastern Time) of stock exchanges in US.
Other Markets: Market Order can be inputted any time.
Any "Good Till Date" options?
No. Only "One Day Order" for "Market Order" is available.
How much fund will be withheld for my Market Buy Order?
When placing a Market Buy Order, fund will be withheld based on the "Upper Limit Price". The excess fund withheld will be released after the order is executed.
For Hong Kong and US markets, the "Upper Limit Price" is based on the stock's current 'ask' price plus certain spreads determined by BOOM from time to time.
For other markets, the "Upper Limit Price" is based on the stock's previous closing price plus its "daily maximum price fluctuation", which is determined by the respective stock exchange(s).
What if I do not have enough buying power to place a Market Buy Order?
If you do not have enough buying power to place a Market Buy Order, you can reduce the quantity. Our system will calculate the maximum number of shares you may place a Market Buy Order for your reference.
Alternatively, you may place a Limit Buy Order. If your Limit Price is higher than the current ask price, your order will be executed at the best price in the market - just like placing a Market Buy Order.
How do I place an order to execute at market price if Market Order is not an available order type?
You can still place an order to execute at market price, even if Market Order is not an available order type for that market.
To BUY: Place a Buy Limit Order with a Limit Price higher than the current ask price.
To SELL: Place a Sell Limit Order with a Limit Price lower than the current bid price.
Example: If you want to sell a stock currently trading at $20, by placing a Sell Limit Order of $18, your order will be executed at any price higher than or equal to $18.
